"A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief"

Hey y'all! It’s been a week that’s for sure. Lots of miracles though. We found some new people to teach and even had a lesson over Facebook video chat!! I also finished reading the Book of Mormon again this morning. I still have the same feelings I had a year ago reading it for the first time. The Book is true. We’ve been trying to serve a lot recently and it’s filled my soul with a lot of joy, peace, and comfort. One thing we’ve done this week to serve was rake leaves. There are a lot of trees in Oxford, let me tell ya. During the week we were doing some door knocking in a neighborhood and saw an older lady standing in her yard with her dog (tons of leaves). So we walked over to her and offered to come back on Saturday to rake her leaves. She said yes so we got her info and scheduled her in for Saturday. Well, we got to her house at about noon and started to rake. It was just Sister Keiser and I for about an hour and then the elders showed up to help as well. I was really loving it because it was my first time raking leaves! Well, a few hours later we finished the ladies yard. She was so grateful and said over and over again, “thank you, thank you, thank you”. We left feeling good about what we did and the spirit lifted our hearts. Well, yesterday we missed two phone calls from a phone number that we didn’t recognize. After church we listened to our voice mail and heard, “This is Karen. You raked my moms leaves the other day and I just wanted to thank you. I would like to talk with you so please call me back”. We called back and were able to talk with her for a few minutes. Karen shared with us that her mother has Alzheimer’s and that she is the only one that cares for her along with having a full time job. She told us that the other day while leaving her moms house she looked out at the front yard and just felt like she really needed to rake the leaves but knew she wouldn’t have time. That day she prayed and asked God for help. She said that when she found out we had raked the leaves it was an answered prayer. She said, “If God cares enough about my mothers leaves, I know that I don’t have to worry about anything else because he’s going to take care of it. This experience definitely affirmed my faith and I thank you so much”. It was such a sweet experience. As I shared last week, Heavenly Father knows all of His children and each and every one of us are precious to Him. He weeps with us when we are in pain and suffering and rejoices when we are happy. I love serving and the joy that it brings. It does more for me than I could ever do for those I serve. I want to share some verses from Matthew 25 and also a few verses of the hymn “A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief”.

Matthew 25
31 When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory:
32 And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats:
33 And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.
34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:
35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:
36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.
37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?
38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?
39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?
40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

“A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief” verses 1 and 5

A poor wayfaring Man of grief
Hath often crossed me on my way,
Who sued so humbly for relief
That I could never answer nay.
I had not pow’r to ask his name,
Whereto he went, or whence he came;
Yet there was something in his eye
That won my love; I knew not why

Stript, wounded, beaten nigh to death,
I found him by the highway side.
I roused his pulse, brought back his breath,
Revived his spirit, and supplied
Wine, oil, refreshment--he was healed.
I had myself a wound concealed,
But from that hour forgot the smart,

And peace bound up my broken heart.

Tender Mercy Cookies

Hey y’all. Sorry this will probably be a short email because we’ve been out and about all day but I wanted to write about some of the details of this past week! So, about a week ago we were trying to make contact with one of our investigators and she wasn’t home. We pulled our car around the corner to park and knock on some doors. Across the street was a house with a pink bike in the front yard. I felt like we should try knocking on the door, especially because it looked like a family lived there. We knocked on the door and a nice girl answered. They had had a busy morning so she asked us to come back another time. Well, this week we were able to teach her! It turns out she’s married, has a daughter and a baby on the way and she’s only about a year older than me. She is so sweet but was really apprehensive about prophets. We taught her about the restoration and just bore testimony over and over again to try to help her feel the spirit. She agreed to read the Book of Mormon. Last night we went to batesville to visit some of the sweet older members in the ward on our visiting teaching list. We visited one lady who is pretty much home bound and brought her some cookies. We shared a message about the #Lighttheworld initiative and afterwards her nephew said, “you know, right before you showed up she was talking about how she wanted cookies but wasn’t going to be able to have any today and then you knocked on the door”. It was a sweet tender mercy. I love when Heavenly Father lets us see just how aware He is of His children and allows you to help Him serve them. Like I said, I don’t have a lot of time but there were many great experiences this week I could talk about. To go along with the story of the delivered cookies I’ll share a few of my favorite verses from the Book of Mormon where a missionary is teaching a man with little knowledge of who God is, just how much He loves and knows him. “And Ammon said unto him: The heavens is a place where God dwells and all his holy angels. And king Lamoni said: Is it above the earth? And Ammon said: Yea, and he looketh down upon all the children of men; and he knows all the thoughts and intents of the heart; for by his hand were they all created from the beginning” (Alma 18:30-32). You are a child of a loving Heavenly Father. I know that because I’ve seen Him reach out to help, save, comfort, succor, sustain, bless, protect, heal, and strengthen me over and over again.

Sick as a Dog but the Book of Mormon is Still True

Hey y’all!! So this week was good but I’ve been soooo sick. I’ve got a terrible cold and it’s not letting up!! Being sick on the mission is seriously miserable. Pray for me!! We had a couple of great experiences this week that I want to talk about. Last Monday evening we felt prompted to visit a member that we had never met before. We knocked on the door and the members boyfriend, Johnny answered. They let us in and we were able to get to know them a little bit. After talking with them it was really clear that Johnny was confused about religion and things that he had been taught in the past. I felt like he was just looking for the truth and peace. We were able to be so bold with him, inviting him to learn about the restored gospel and to read the Book of Mormon. At one point I even felt prompted to say, “I exhort you to read the Book of Mormon to know the truth for yourself”. The spirit was SO strong and I know he felt it. Later in the week the zone leaders, District leader, oxford elders and us did a blitz of the area to spread the new #LightTheWorld initiative around Oxford. If you haven’t seen the video yet, go to Mormon.org to watch it! The blitz was so fun and we met a bunch of people. We had a cool experience with one of our investigators that same day as well. We sat down for our lesson and she started to cry as she talked about some of the trials she’s going through. She said, “if there is more that God wants me to know, I’m ready for it”. We handed her a copy of the Book of Mormon and said, “here it is; this is what He wants you to know”. I LOVE THE BOOK OF MORMON AND I KNOW THAT IT IS TRUE. The prophet Joseph smith taught that the Book of Mormon is the keystone of our religion. President Ezra Taft Benson said that it is our “keystone” for at least three reasons: It testifies of Jesus Christ and is an additional witness of His divinity, it contains the fullness of the doctrine that Christ taught, and it is the foundation of our testimony of the restoration of the gospel in these latter-days. I’ve come to know that all of the above is true by reading the Book of Mormon with a sincere heart, faith in Christ, a desire to know it’s truthfulness and a willingness to act on the message it teaches. By the power of the Holy Ghost I know that the Book of Mormon is the word of God. I’ll never stop testifying of that. The gospel makes me so happy and that is reason enough for me to live it. I hope that y’all had a great thanksgiving and felt the spirit as you reflected on all that Heavenly Father has blessed you with. He is so good.

Thankful

This week was suuuuper good and successful. I realized I didn’t give y’all a lot of details when I first got transferred to Oxford so I’ll try to catch you up in this letter. First of all, we opened up a new area which means a blank area book (aka no investigators or contacts). Luckily there’s a companionship of elders in the area so they helped us get a little acquainted with the area and campus. Secondly, we are the first sisters to serve in this area in about 5 years so the members were super excited to have us. The Ole Miss campus is in our area and we are somewhat able to find people to teach there. It’s kind of like Russia; we can’t approach the students but if they approach us we can teach them. Hopefully in the near future we will have more access to on campus proselyting. We’ve spent some time walking around campus this past week to get the students familiar with seeing us and to hopefully spark some interest. We also did a lot of walking around the outskirts of campus where we can approach and talk with anyone we see. The success we had this week came in finding new people to teach! On Monday night we went to have a family home evening with a couple in the ward. Well, when we got there we met their non member friends Kirstin and Ricky who were staying the night. We were able to teach them the message of the restoration and invite them to read the Book of Mormon. It’s so great to find unexpected and unplanned opportunities to teach. The members here are awesome! They’re helping us find so many people to teach the gospel to. We’ve had a couple of lessons with the nonmember husband of a member in the ward and it’s going really well. His name is Sonnie and man I love him and his wife!! They are so sweet and I feel like they’re family at this point. When we teach them the spirit is always really strong and I feel like we are able to be bold and loving with them when sharing principles of the gospel. We invited Sonnie to start reading the Book of Mormon to find out if it’s true and helped him download the Book of Mormon app on his phone. He loved that because he was having trouble reading the small print of the paper copy. He is really shy but he said, “I was reading the pamphlet (the restoration pamphlet we left with him) and I understand what you’re saying”. It was so sweet and sincere. I love them so much. They said we can help them set up their Christmas decorations after Thanksgiving so that’s something I’m looking forward to. On Thursday we had a spiritual experience. We were walking all day (11 miles to be exact) and towards the end of the evening we decided to take an unplanned route. Well, after walking that way for a while we ran into a familiar face from church. The member hurriedly came up to us and said, “I NEED A FERVENT PRAYER”. He explained that he had come outside of where he was working to take a phone call and set his laptop down on a bench outside. He went inside after the call and realized he didn’t have his laptop. He ran outside and it was no where to be found. He was searching for it when suddenly we walked by. So, we said a prayer with him that he would be directed to where the laptop was. Well, after that we said good luck and started to part ways. We watched him go into a nearby shop and ask a woman if she had seen anything. Well, through the store window we watched the woman pull his laptop out from behind the counter!! He gave the lady a big hug and Sister Keiser and I just laughed and thanked God that he had found it. Tender mercies and miracles. On Friday we went to teach an investigator that we had found last week. She wasn’t home but her son Tyrese was on sitting on the porch with two of his friends, Brandon and Que so we took advantage of the opportunity to teach! We taught them about the restoration and the Book of Mormon. We also taught them about prayer and receiving revelation from Heavenly Father. When we started driving away after the lesson I looked back and saw all three of them gathered together on the porch starting to read the Book of Mormon together. It made me so happy! To top off all of the amazing lessons we had, Kirstin and Ricky ended up coming to church on Sunday. They brought their copies of the Book of Mormon and we could tell that they had been studying! It was a great week full of so many miracles. With thanksgiving coming up quickly I want to express how thankful I am for the gospel of Jesus Christ, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth” (Romans 1:16). God the Eternal Father lives!! He loves us. He knows us. Jesus Christ is His son. Through Christ we can be cleansed from sin and healed of spiritual wounds. The Book of Mormon is the word of God. I’m thankful for all of these plain and precious truths and the many more that make up the fullness of the gospel of Jesus Christ and God’s merciful plan for our redemption. “God be thanked for the matchless gift of His divine Son” (the Living Christ). Happy thanksgiving week!! Hope y’all get to celebrate it with momenem (southern word referring to “mom and them”) hahahahahha gotta love tha souuuuth

"HOTTY TODDY"

Hotty toddy & Sis Gummow

Hello friends and family, from the beautiful state of Mississippi. I spent my whole childhood spelling out Mississippi because it’s fun and look at me now. I’m living the dream!! Oxford, MS is home to the University of Mississippi or more commonly known as Ole Miss. I love it here. It’s like no other area I’ve been in so far. My new companion is Sister Gummow and we are having a great time getting to know the members and knocking on doors. The members in the ward have been SO willing to give us referrals which is such a breathe of fresh air. Missionary work is a lot easier and more productive when members are at the head of it. All the people we’ve met so far in this area have been very nice. Southern charm and hospitality is real down here. We knocked on a door and a young man about our age answered. I asked where he was from and he told us the name of a town. I asked if that was in Mississippi and he said, “no ma’am, it’s in Alabama” with the thickest southern accent. I was so charmed. Too bad he doesn’t have the gospel. He wasn’t interested but he WAS polite. We were knocking doors in another area and a lady answered. She had a bandage on her nose and slightly blackened eyes (we are pretty sure she had just gotten a nose job). She wasn’t interested in our message so we asked for referrals. She said, “I don’t really know my neighbors, this is just our ‘football season’ house”. Hahaha Ole Miss football is no joke. So, through out the week we’ve been seeing the phrase “HOTTY TODDY” printed on just about anything you can imagine (t-shirt’s, cups, flags, cars, billboards, etc.). Finally we asked a lady what it means. She laughed and said, “it’s a drink...” lol we found out later that that’s not really correct so she was probably trying to be funny ‘cause we’re Mormons ya know. Well, HOTTY TODDY is actually a greeting phrase and a part of some of the Ole Miss chants. The drink came after the phrase. So, HOTTY TODDY (hey, what’s up). Anyways, it was a good week because we haven’t knocked on any frat houses yet and hopefully never will *shivers at the thought*. This week I was struggling with some personal things. I was praying really hard. I was telling Heavenly Father that I was angry because someone had treated me badly. Well, Heavenly Father quickly put the thought into my mind and heart, “I bet Jesus Christ wanted to react when He was treated badly”. The Book of Mormon verses Alma 7:11-12 ran through my mind which say, “And he shall go forth, suffering pains and afflictions and temptations of every kind; and this that the word might be fulfilled which saith he will take upon him the pains and the sicknesses of his people. And he will take upon him death, that he may loose the bands of death which bind his people; and he will take upon him their infirmities, that his bowels may be filled with mercy, according to the flesh, that he may know according to the flesh how to succor his people according to their infirmities”. It was a great wake up call to me and certainly a humbling moment. Jesus Christ has felt all that I have and ever will and so much more. His dignity, humility, long suffering, patience, submissiveness, faith and diligence is a perfect example to us all and especially to me. I love my Savior. He is my good shepherd and yours. Have faith in Him. He will carry you through.

HOTTY TODDY & have a great week,
Sister Guthrie

October 2nd & Oct 9th emails

Always Choose the Painful of Discipline

This week was sooooooo good. We went on exchanges with three different
companionships this week!!! I was out of our area for 4 days. It was a
good chance for sister Feinga to get better acquainted to the new area
and honestly it was a much needed thing for me. I was in Little Rock
for a few days doing exchanges with the ASL sisters and the Hermanas
so there were also a few different languages thrown in there. I also
went to Hot Springs: the boyhood home of Bill Clinton. The highlight
of my week was Saturday. Elder Jörg Klebingat of the first quorum of
the seventy did a mission tour with us. I can't put into words how
much I learned and felt and experienced so I won't even try. I can
tell you, I know that my Heavenly Father is aware of me and loves me.
I had a very spiritual and perfect witness of that this weekend. One
concept that Elder Klebingat touched on that was particularity
impactful to me is the difference between the pain of discipline and
the pain of regret. Think about that. I know that we've all felt the
pain of regret. I've felt that pain so deeply that it was almost
debilitating. It's miserable and it's dark and it's lasting. On the
other hand, the pain of discipline is momentary pain that comes when
we choose to do something good and right even though it may be
difficult. The pain of discipline brings joy while the pain of regret
brings sorrow. Over the past couple of days I've tried to apply that
principle as literally as possible. When making any decision I've
asked myself, would I rather go through the pain of discipline or the
pain of regret? Every time gone through this process, I mentally
choose the pain of disciple and then righteous action follows. I
invite all of you to always choose the pain of discipline over the
pain of regret. A few other things were made very clear to me from our
meeting with Elder Klebingat. First is that Heavenly Fathers plan is
so much greater than we can comprehend. We did not begin to exist at
birth and we will not cease to exist after death. I better understand
who I was and what I agreed to before coming to this earth and that is
motivating me to work harder than ever before. Second is that we need
to know the scriptures, and we need to know them well. The third is
that for any of us to "make it" in these last days we are going to
have to gain and sustain our own unshakable testimony of Jesus Christ
and of the restoration of the gospel. I know that Jesus Christ lives
and is our Savior every single day. I know that Joseph Smith saw God
the Father and the Son. I know that the Book of Mormon is scripture
and will bring us nearer to God than any other book, if we will abide
by its teachings. I know that the pain of discipline is always worth
it.

Hope y'all have a great week!

After the mission tour with SL (sister lange)

Hey sorry y'all apparently this never sent. This is last weeks update. (October 2nd No pics as of yet?)

Hey everyone! Another week in Little Rock. We've found some cool new
people to teach but the struggle has been teaching them a second time.
It's been a bit discouraging, but we prevail. This morning I was
reading in the Book of Mormon in Alma chapter 8. At this point Alma
the younger is preaching the gospel to various groups of people. After
having success and baptizing many in one area that he goes to, Alma
heads to the city of Ammonihah. Well, "Now Satan had gotten great hold
upon the hearts of the people of the city of Ammonihah; therefore they
would not hearken unto the words of Alma". These people rejected Alma,
spit on him and kicked him out of the city. Nobody spit on me this
week or said, "get out of Little Rock", but we did face a lot of
rejection. Well, Alma left Ammonihah and the scriptures say, "And it
came to pass that while he was journeying thither, being weighed down
with sorrow, wading through much tribulation and anguish of soul,
because of the wickedness of the people who were in the city of
Ammonihah, it came to pass while Alma was thus weighed down with
sorrow, behold an angel of the Lord appeared unto him..". You could
say I've been a little weighed down with sorrow and had a bit of soul
anguish as I've thought of all of my brothers and sisters around me
who, at this time, may not be open to the message of the restoration.
Well, the angel that visited Alma told him to go back to the city, and
Alma does go back, "speedily" I might add. It says that Alma "entered
the city by another way" and this time, he was received by a man named
Amulek who had been prepared by the Lord. Amulek became Alma's
missionary companion and together they preached the gospel. As I read
this I thought about what the Lord wants me to do right now, even
though things are hard in Little Rock and rejection is frequent. I
think He wants me to keep trying. I think He wants me to "enter by
another way" and not give up. I'm thankful for the scriptures and the
lessons they teach. General conference was a great spiritual
experience and I hope you all had the chance to tune in. If not, I
invite you to read the conference talks when they are released. Study
them. Apply them. Be blessed.

I love y'all, have a great week and I LOVE OCTOBER HAPPY FALL (unless
if you're in Arkansas, it's still summer here)

Let Us Go Up to the Mountain of The Lord.

Hi family and friends! It probably feels like I just emailed y'all but here we go again. Sister Feinga and I were able to go to the temple today with two recent converts in the ward to participate in baptisms for the dead, which is why I'm emailing today. It was such a great experience. I love the temple. It is such a peaceful place. Im thankful to live in a time when temples, true houses of the Lord, are upon the Earth and we are able to attend so often. In Isaiah chapter 2 verses 2 and 3 we read, "And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it. And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem". The prophesy found in Malachi chapter 4 verses 5 and 6 is also being fulfilled as we work to unite all of the children of God through family history and sacred ordinances performed in the house of the Lord. God has said, "I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord: And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers.." (Malachi 4:5-6). What a great and marvelous work. It's all missionary work!!! It's all the work of salvation. It's all to fulfill Heavenly Father's purpose "..to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man" (Moses 1:39). Sister Feinga and I have had a really successful week so far! On Wednesday we were able to have a lesson with a lady named Jenny that sister Lange and I had met a few months ago. Sister Feinga and I decided before going in that we needed to just establish our purpose with her right away and then teach the restoration. Well, from the minute we walked in the door Jenny was completely ready for us. She sat right down with her daughter, put her copy of the Book of Mormon in her lap, and said something to the effect of, "ok, we are ready to listen". Sister Feinga and I looked at each other, looked back at Jenny, and then got to teaching. The spirit was so strong as we taught the message of the restoration. She loved it and asked a lot of sincere questions. She was really excited about a living prophet. After the lesson Jenny looked to her daughter and said, "well what do you think?" to which her teenage daughter replied, "it's pretty cool". We have another lesson scheduled with them next week and hopefully they will be able to come to church tomorrow. Sister Feinga and I have had some really spiritual experiences with visiting teaching this week as well. President Hansen invited us to start visit teaching certain less active families and individuals in our wards and branches. Our relief society president prayed and selected about 15 names for us to try to visit, so we've been working on that for the past couple of weeks. It's been a testimony builder to see the Lord put individuals into our mind at the time that we need to go visit them. God's timing is perfect. Many of the women we've started to visit have children and spouses who are not members of the church. Our goal is to teach them the restored gospel and invite them to come unto Christ. Yesterday we were able visit the family I wrote about a few weeks ago. We met the wife of an inactive member of the church by chance (or by God) while visiting someone else in an apartment complex. She had invited us in for a bottle of water and to use the restroom. So, last week we brought them cookies to thank them and now this week we were able to sit down with them in their home and talk about the gospel. The husband has such a sincere desire to return to church. It made my heart so happy to hear him talk about how thankful he is that we came and that he knows it's time for him to move forward and get active again. His wife goes to another church but is open to taking the missionary discussions. They just had a baby and I know that it is part of Gods plan for them to learn of the gospel at this time. Before we left the husband said, "you know you've gotta leave me with a fresh copy of the Book of Mormon before you leave right?". I love being a missionary. I love being able to represent my Savior, Jesus Christ. I'm thankful for the blessing it has been to learn to see every person as a son or daughter of God. We are all God's children and He loves us. I know that's true. That's all I've got for you today. I won't be emailing this Monday because today became our pday with the temple trip. I'll talk with y'all again the next Monday.

Much love,

Lessons Learned from the Sacred Grove

We have a smartphone so that's weird!!

This week Sister Feinga and I had so much fun! We walked a lot and
biked a lot and FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER WE TOOK THE CITY BUS
DOWNTOWN.... and we sure did meet some interesting people.
Elect? Maybe not. I just have to say that I love Little Rock. It's the
greatest little city. Picture this, Little Rock is a big ol' pot of
gumbo but the people are the veggies, various meats and ingredients
and the city itself is the pot. The first experience I'd like to share
from this week happened on Tuesday. Sister Feinga and I were walking
down the street in the afternoon and it started raining. Well, a man
pulled up beside us and asked us if he could help. He had just barely
moved to America and barely spoke English. We had to decline because
we can't accept rides from men without another woman in the car. We
did however ask him for his info and we gave him our card. We got his
phone number and sent him a text later in the week with a link to a
Mormon message. We also invited him to attend church with us. Well you
know what? He showed up! Tender mercy! Our other investigators,
Melissa and her two daughters, also came to church yesterday which we
were really happy about because they hadn't been able to come for the
past two weeks. They are doing well, considering all of the trials
they are dealing with right now, and are preparing for baptism on the
7th of October.

It's true that satan works really hard to prevent
people from doing something good. This week I felt strongly that I
needed to study Joseph Smith History to be able to help Michelle and
her daughters as they've been facing one trial after another. I
learned so much and gained a great perspective on trials, light and
darkness, and missionary work. In the history of his experiences,
Joseph Smith begins by describing his family and also the beginning of
his struggle to know which church he should join. He says,
"During this time of great excitement my mind was called up to serious
reflection and great uneasiness; but though my feelings were deep and
often poignant, still I kept myself aloof from all these parties,
though I attended their several meetings as often as occasion would
permit. In process of time my mind became somewhat partial to the
Methodist sect, and I felt some desire to be united with them; but so
great were the confusion and strife among the different denominations,
that it was impossible for a person young as I was, and so
unacquainted with men and things, to come to any certain conclusion
who was right and who was wrong" (v. 8).

From this verse I learned that at this time, before having the first vision,
Joseph Smith was really doing to best that he could according to the light that he
had been given. He was attending different churches, pondering and
reflecting on what was taught, and he even began to lean towards the
Methodists. He wasn't sitting around half-heartedly desiring to know
which church was true. He was actively searching. This helped me to
realize that there are good people who are doing the best that they
can and, "are only kept from the truth because they know not where to
find it" (D&C 123:12).

Also, when Joseph Smith says, "it was impossible for a person
young as I was, and so unacquainted
with men and things, to come to any certain conclusion who was right and who
was wrong"  really struck me, because the matter of which doctrine is
correct really doesn't involve being "acquainted with men and things",
which Joseph Smith eventually came to discover as he had a revelatory
experience with God the Father and the Son without being a "man" at
all (he was only 14 years old), and especially not a man of high rank
or education. Jospeh Smith goes on to say, "My mind at times was
greatly excited, the cry and tumult were so great and incessant. The
Presbyterians were most decided against the Baptists and Methodists,
and used all the powers of both reason and sophistry to prove their
errors, or, at least, to make the people think they were in error. On
the other hand, the Baptists and Methodists in their turn were equally
zealous in endeavoring to establish their own tenets and disprove all
others" (verse 9). This is noteworthy because it's something that is
still happening today. How frustrating that some people and
organizations only find worth and create credibility by tearing others down.

As we know, Joseph Smith turned to the scriptures for answers
and came across James 1:5 which says, "If any of you lack wisdom, let
him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not;
and it shall be given him". Joseph said, "Never did any passage of
scripture come with more power to the heart of man than this did at
this time to mine. It seemed to enter with great force into every
feeling of my heart. I reflected on it again and again, knowing that
if any person needed wisdom from God, I did; for how to act I did not
know, and unless I could get more wisdom than I then had, I would
never know; for the teachers of religion of the different sects
understood the same passages of scripture so differently as to destroy
all confidence in settling the question by an appeal to the Bible. At
length I came to the conclusion that I must either remain in darkness
and confusion, or else I must do as James directs, that is, ask of
God. I at length came to the determination to “ask of God,” concluding
that if he gave wisdom to them that lacked wisdom, and would give
liberally, and not upbraid, I might venture. So, in accordance with
this, my determination to ask of God, I retired to the woods to make
the attempt.." (verses 12-14). Again, he was actively engaged in
finding an answer to his question. He studied the Bible and when he
felt the power of a specific verse of scripture, he acted upon it.

The next thing he did was pray. He went into a grove of trees near his
house and knelt down and began to "offer up the desires of his heart".
What a great example of the pattern we can all follow to receive
personal revelation. Personal revelation is real. God is our Heavenly
Father and He loves us. He is not an impersonal and obscure being who
is unknowable. We can actually go to Him with our questions and He
will actually listen and answer. Of his experience inquiring of the
Lord, Joseph Smith said, "..It was on the morning of a beautiful,
clear day, early in the spring of eighteen hundred and twenty. It was
the first time in my life that I had made such an attempt, for amidst
all my anxieties I had never as yet made the attempt to pray vocally.
After I had retired to the place where I had previously designed to
go, having looked around me, and finding myself alone, I kneeled down
and began to offer up the desires of my heart to God. I had scarcely
done so, when immediately I was seized upon by some power which
entirely overcame me, and had such an astonishing influence over me as
to bind my tongue so that I could not speak. Thick darkness gathered
around me, and it seemed to me for a time as if I were doomed to
sudden destruction. But, exerting all my powers to call upon God to
deliver me out of the power of this enemy which had seized upon me,
and at the very moment when I was ready to sink into despair and
abandon myself to destruction--not to an imaginary ruin, but to the
power of some actual being from the unseen world, who had such
marvelous power as I had never before felt in any being--just at this
moment of great alarm, I saw a pillar of light exactly over my head,
above the brightness of the sun, which descended gradually until it
fell upon me. It no sooner appeared than I found myself delivered from
the enemy which held me bound. When the light rested upon me I saw two
Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing
above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and
said, pointing to the other--This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!" (v.15-17).

First of all, I can tell you that this is true and that it
really happened. Joseph Smith really did see God the Father and Jesus
Christ. They actually spoke to him. At this time he was instructed by
Jesus Christ to join none of the churches because they were all
corrupt, they taught as doctrine the "commandments of men". The
churches all had a form of Godliness but denied the power thereof.
But, I want to talk about what happened to Joseph Smith almost
immediately after he began to pray. It says he was seized upon by a
power of darkness, an actual being from the unseen world, which almost
completely overcame him. Why? Wasn't he doing something good? He chose
to act on the scripture he had read. He chose to kneel down and pray.
So why was he overcome and surrounded by darkness? Our investigators
are doing something good. They have chosen to be baptized. They are
trying to change their lives. So why are bad things happening to them?
I think there are a lot of possible answers, but I feel that a large
part of it is a symbol for our lives. First of all, even if and when
we choose to follow the Lord and make good choices, darkness will
still come. Trials will still come. Life will never be a walk in the
park because that's not the plan. The plan is to be tested and
refined. There must be opposition in ALL things. Secondly, I know that
satan knew long before Joseph knelt down to pray in that grove of
trees what was going to occur thereafter. The restoration of the
fullness of the gospel of Jesus Christ was really going to mess with
satan's plan to destroy us all. So, he did all that he could to
prevent it from happening. However, he did not succeed. Light will
always overpower darkness and good will always win in the fight
against evil. Satan knows that our investigators are going to do so
much good by being baptized and becoming members of Christ's church,
so he is doing all that he can to stop them. However, I have faith in
God and faith that good things will come.

I know that light will overrule the darkness for our investigators to be baptized
just as it did for the restoration of the gospel to come forth. The true church
of Jesus Christ has been restored to the earth. Jesus is the Christ
and the head of His church. Joseph Smith was a prophet and you can't
know that without praying about it, so if you don't agree I invite you
to pray and ask God. At the end of his experience, Joseph Smith says,
"It seems as though the adversary was aware, at a very early period of
my life, that I was destined to prove a disturber and an annoyer of
his kingdom; else why should the powers of darkness combine against
me?" (v. 20). My invitation to you today is to be an annoyer of
satan's kingdom. "Therefore, fear not, little flock; do good; let
earth and hell combine against you, for if ye are built upon my rock,
they cannot prevail" (D&C 6:34).

P.s. I almost forgot, on Wednesday I got hit by a car while riding my bike!!!!

*a note from Mom Guthrie regarding Sister Guthrie being hit by a car, Bailey is fine. She was not broken or permanently damaged. I think the most painful part of it all, is the driver did not stop to see if she was ok.
